ASL Fingerspelling Robotic Hand

Jetson Orin NanoROSMuJoCoPCA9685Servo-driven tendonsCAD

Overview

A dual-arm humanoid robotic hand system that mechanically translates spoken letters into American Sign Language fingerspelling in real time, pairing a Jetson Orin Nano speech-to-text pipeline with a 16-servo-per-arm, tendon-driven hand design validated in MuJoCo simulation before hardware assembly.

Key Highlights

  • Covers 24 letters of the manual alphabet (excluding the two motion-dependent letters)
  • Two iterative hardware designs — from an outsourced initial prototype to a custom tendon-driven dual-arm rig
  • Built for under 3,130 SAR using a mix of 20 kg, 150 kg, and 380 kg digital servos
  • Full mechanical actuation validated across both arms; the speech-to-sign software pipeline is ongoing
